Northern Group of Motoring Writers’ 50th Anniversary Newsletter
The first Northern Group of Motoring Writers’ Newsletter of 2023 is now available, and it’s a pretty special one as we mark our 50th anniversary year with the biggest newsletter ever.
Once again our long-serving newsletter editor, and one of the founding members of the Group, David Whinyates has put together an interesting round-up, covering a bumper 32 pages. While this would ordinarily tell the tale of what we’ve all been up to over the last couple of months, this edition is also packed out with memories of the past five decades.
This retrospective issue looks across the Group’s history, with 114 members and a total of 21 chairs thus far, and some of the wild and wonderful things under our collective wheels. After the traditional opening message from current chairman Andy Harris, the globetrotting begins.
You’ll read about travels to all five continents, from David himself on a trek across North America in a Vauxhall Vectra, Fred Manby taking in North Africa in a Chrysler Horizon, and Mike Torpey taking a Land Rover Discovery through the Andes on the Argentina/Chile border. While much closer to home, Maurice Glover recalls the time Volkswagen introduced the Mk2 Golf with flights on Concorde — to Munich — while Tom Sharpe had his own plane adventures with the Mazda RX-8.
There’s also some kind words from our colleagues in the PR industry, including Wayne Bruce, Paul Buckett, Denis Chick, Alun Parry, and ex-NGMW member Steve Kitson.
If you’re in the motor industry, the newsletter will already be in your inbox, but you can also access it in the Newsletters section of this site or via the link below:
