Holme Moss Hill Climb 2024 Centenary Event Raises £1800 for Yorkshire Air Ambulance

The fifth and final Centenary Celebration of the Holme Moss Hill Climb event — organised by NGMW member Guy Loveridge — took place on Saturday August 10th, raising almost £1,800 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Guy established these events in 2020, after over two years’ planning and preparation, to mark 100 years since the original which ran from 1920-1924 and attracted legendary names like Malcolm Campbell and Henry Segrave.

Based at The Fleece Inn in Holme, which has served as the hub since the inception of the Centenary event, more than 100 vehicles gathered together for over 1,000 ascents of the historic hill climb route. Drives took place between 10am and 4pm across the day.

Former Financial Times motoring correspondent John Griffiths was among those who joined the event, in his Porsche, commenting that “[we] were so glad Guy made us aware of it. What a fun event in such spectacular countryside and great people, we enjoyed every minute of it!”

Over the five years, the events have grown in attendance — as have the funds raised for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, year on year. This year’s event raised almost £1,800 on the day — though t-shirt sales continue! — and the total from 2020-2024 now sits at over £3,400, exceeding the original five-year target of £2,500.

The winner of this year’s event was Stuart Holland, club secretary of Huddersfield Motor Club, who worked alongside Guy to make the events happen. Holland took home the trophy, the 1964 Daily Mirror Trophy originally won by Innes Ireland at Snetterton.

Special awards were also given to Christianne Ireland, who has attended all of the events in the name of her late father Innes, George Loveridge who has handled photography, videography and social media for the event since the off, Shirley Amesbury of The Fleece Inn, and Ian Kellett who has supported the event since 2018 and the initial meetings that asked “What if…? Could we….? Let’s try!”.

As the gathering has run out of Centenary Events, next year’s staging will be re-branded to become The Ireland Motor Racing Northern Gathering. That’s scheduled to take place on August 9th 2025.
