Jonathan is a traditionally trained journalist who began his career in Chester on a weekly newspaper, and went on to work on a Lancashire evening before graduating to Fleet Street, as a staffer on the Daily Mail and then the Daily Express. He was a regular columnist on the Express, where he was also a news executive and later chief sub-editor for the Daily and Sunday Express before taking early retirement.

From 1980 he began freelancing, working on a regular basis for 14 different publications and websites, and is a former Pirelli Motoring Writer of the Year. Currently Jonathan provides Driving Force with first drives and car reviews, and is a contributor to drive.co.uk among other websites and publications.

Invited to join Northern Group of Motoring Writers in 1977, he is now one of its longest-serving active members.
