Ginetta Akula Supercar Revealed in Production Form, Limited to 20 Vehicles
More than five years after revealing the original concept car, Leed-based Ginetta Cars has shown off the final, production form of the Akula supercar.
Ginetta has been refining the vehicle over the past five years with the goal being to create a vehicle that you and passenger can pack with luggage, drive to the Nurburgring, pound out a few laps, and then drive home again without a fuss.
The Akula is designed around Ginetta’s myriad racing programs, and comprises a full carbon-fibre monocoque with carbon fibre subframe assemblies. A motorsport-grade steel roll cage adds to the track-safety and overall vehicle rigidity.
All of the car’s heaviest components are placed within the wheelbase in order to give it as close to a 50:50 weight balance as possible. That includes the front-mid-mounted engine, a 6.4-litre, naturally aspirated V8 with a Ginetta-designed aluminium block which develops 600hp at 7,200rpm.
Power will be delivered to the rear wheels only through either a triple-clutched six-speed manual or an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, with a Ginetta limited-slip differential to help with traction. The 0-60mph sprint is stated as 2.9s, although it’s not clear with which gearbox.
At the extremities there’s aerodynamic aids derived from those of the G60-LT-P1 racing car, Ginetta’s LMP1 entry from 2018-19, and features a large front splitter, canards, and rear wing and diffuser — all together joined by a flat carbon-fibre floor — to generate the high downforce required for track-day duties.
Ginetta hasn’t mentioned specific figures, but the prototype was stated at 400kg — over a third of the car’s weight — from 100mph, though that did have a far larger rear wing.
Braking comes from a GT4-derived four-pot caliper and steel disc setup, but there’s also an optional Akula Race Pack upgrade to carbon-ceramic discs. The Pack also adds six-point safety harnesses to the custom-moulded seats, and Ginetta race gear that includes a suit, boots, gloves, and underwear…
It’s no stripped-back toy either, as Ginetta eyes a GT role for the Akula. It includes an electronically adjustable steering column and pedal box, a custom touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay support, wireless phone charging, and a heated windscreen!
Should you want to pick up the Akula, you’ll need reasonably deep pockets and a pretty rapid reaction time. There’ll only be 20 cars made in total — to mark 20 years since Le Mans-winner Lawrence Tomlinson bought the brand — with a base price of £275,000 before options, taxes and shipping.
Tomlinson, who has his name down for the first car off the line, commented:
“During the twenty years I have owned Ginetta, there have been countless highlights. None, though, surpass the launch of the Akula today. While our new supercar represents a very different direction for Ginetta, it also embodies our motorsport engineering and driver-focused values to the highest possible standards.”
