United Autosports Reveals McLaren 720S GT3 for the 2024 World Endurance Championship
United Autosports has revealed the two McLaren 720S GT3 Evos it will be campaigning across all eight rounds of the 2024 World Endurance Championship, including at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The Wakefield-based endurance racing specialist team will be the official partner of McLaren in the 2024 championship, which will see the marque return to Le Mans for the first time since 1998 when its “longtail” F1 GTR evolution returned a fourth-place finish.
McLaren won’t be vying for overall victory in this year’s race, with the 720S entering the new LMGT3 class. This category replaces the GTE classes of previous seasons with a more cost-effective GT3-based grouping.
However the cars will both be paying homage to McLaren’s famous victory in 1995 where its original F1 GTR took the overall win in extremely wet conditions — as well as third, fourth, and fifth place — beating all six of the top-class WSC entries.
The cars will both be decked out in a mix of black, matching the livery of the Le Mans-winning machine, and the famous McLaren “Papaya” orange. Notably they’ll also be wearing the numbers #59 and #95, which references the winning F1’s race number and the year of the race in question.
While similar, they aren’t identical. You’ll be able to pick out the #59 by its orange sunstrip and mirror casings, while the #95 has black items instead.
Full driver line-ups for the season have also been announced too. Nicolas Costa, James Cottingham, and Gregoire Saucy will drive the #59 in all eight rounds, while the #95’s driving team will be Josh Caygill, Nico Pino, and Marino Sato.
Although the LMP2 category no longer exists in the FIA World Endurance Championship, it’s still part of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and United Autosports will also be entering two cars in this class, keeping a streak that goes back to 2017 — with one class win in 2020.
