Gridserve Opens High Power Electric Super Hub at Wetherby Services
Electric vehicle owners in the north have more options to charge their cars, as Gridserve and Moto have opened a new High Power Electric Super Hub at Wetherby services in North Yorkshire.
The hub includes 12 of the highest capacity 350kW chargers in the first such installation in Yorkshire. It joins a similar Gridserve hub at Burton-in-Kendal services on the M6 in Cumbria.
With 12 charging bays featuring the 350kW rapid chargers, Gridserve’s capacity at Moto Wetherby — just off the A1(M) near Wetherby — now totals 15, with three Medium Power Chargers already available. All are located near the Days Inn hotel on the services site.
These 350kW chargers would be capable of fully charging a 100kWh battery pack in just over 15 minutes, however very few cars are compatible with the maximum output from these 800V chargers and most will charge at lower power, taking longer as a result.
In order to enable as much access as possible, the new rapid chargers all feature CCS-type connectors, with six also including CHAdeMO-type connectors. The existing Medium Power options all have CCS, CHAdeMo, and AC connectors. As well as providing accessible bays, the chargers all supply power from net-zero carbon energy.
Although the installation is Gridserve’s second 350kW location in the north, other options for these high power chargers are already available in the region.
Ionity operates 350kW sites in Blackburn (Blackburn & Darwen services) and Leeds (Leeds Skelton Lake Services), while a recent HyperHub initiative has seen two EvoEnergy sites open near York with 175kW chargers which will be upgraded to 350kW as more cars become capable of this type of charging.
